out with the old, in with the new

last night my roommate (h) and i decided to watch the woodrow wilson
bridge get blown up. of course all the news reports said that 11:59pm
was GO time. of course all that was going through my head was that
going to work the next day would not be fun. but since the we had
grown up so near to the bridge and crossed it on any trip up north, we
figured it would be something worth experiencing. H decides to take a
nap, but tells me that she's set her alarm. i know that once i go to
sleep i'm not waking up so instead i stay up and pass the time
listening to music and looking up recipes. 11:30 comes and goes. H
isn't awake. so i try and wake her up and she doesn't. i even drip
water on her and she doesnt. so i decide, well fine, its not a big
deal i guess, i can just go to sleep. too bad i had drunk (dranken?)
a red bull in anticipation of staying up. so i can't fall asleep.
its 11:45, i'm bracing myself against my pillow waiting to hear the
big BOOM. and i hear a cell phone ring..and H talking. good she can
sit ourside with me and listen for it and lok for the flash of light
from the comfort of our front yard. but she wants to go down there..
we can maybe find a high point and try and look out since we missed
out on going to a pier to watch. we keep driving. until i see
flashing lights and people streaming towards a site. we luck out with
a parking space right there and walk fast to the crowd of people
standing on the lookout bridge.

its 1200 now.. we thought for sure it happend. but peole are still
standing there. so pushing our way past the crowd of people.. us
short girls make our way to the front. ..well almost. some tall guy
is standing right there and we're looking in between is armpits.. when
he turns around and sees us and was extrememly nice enough to let us
get infront of him.

seriously, more tall people should do that. you have a huge advantage
over us smaller people, so the least you can do is let us get around
you! you're still going to be able to see over us.. so anyways, i was
just really happy about the gesture. and then we are waiting and
waiting. but we keep seeing cars driving over the bridge from the md
side and an alexandria cop tells us that the MD side failed to stop
the cars. now its 12:15. .. time keeps ticking. cars keep coming
across the bridge from maryland, while the cars from VA had been
stopped for a long time. we keep thinking this one is going to be the
last car. but the cars keep stopping on the new bridge, everyone wants
to get their chance to try and park on the bridge. i lose track of
time, but luckily the really helpful alexandrai cops who are making
sure we don't jump over the jersey walls keep us updated as to what
the status is. 5 minutes.. 3 minutes. people are shouting Blow up
the bridge! blow up the bridge! some people are starting count downs,
every so often people will start cheering. and then finally. someone
says here it goes! and theres several bursts of light like red
fireworks a bang and a shake and smoke comes up from the bridge. That
was it? seems to be the reaction by most.

to see what really happened, watch the washington post video
(http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/video/2006/08/28/VI2006082800537.html)
.. they always get a better angle then us common folk anyways.

but you know, i'm glad i went. almost like the end of an era. at
least for me it feels tha way, out with the old and in with the new.
I was there to experience it and that was the fun part. As we walked
away, seeing people pass by with their woodrow wilson face cutouts, I
thought, it was worth it.
